Expressive Writing to Release Emotions

A while ago one of our members told me about a writing practice she does and I thought I’d give it a try. It’s called Expressive Writing and the purpose is to get thoughts and emotions out of our psyche and get a sense of separation from them.

This is what she suggested:

Pick a time to just sit and write without interruption. Write everything that comes to mind, what you’re thinking, what your feeling. Just write. Don’t write with the idea that someone will read it or that it’s is a work of art! Just write whatever comes up. If you don’t know what to write just start by writing, “I don’t know what to write”, if you get stuck about what to write you can scribble, “I feel stuck about what to write”. Let everything just flow out of your pen onto the paper. No editing, no judging.

Choose something uncomfortable, but not traumatic to start with. When you’re done, rip up the paper and throw it away.

This is a natural way to purge and release emotions. I gave it a try on several occasions during a time when I was challenged with resentment, anger, and grief. I was surprised how much it helped me to release stuck emotions.

Give it a try and let us know your experience.
